Amphigean Limited

Working across the country

Amphigean is a specialist telecommunications consultancy working in the telecommunications and associated industry sectors. Its core team works in different locations throughout the UK and often works overseas on projects.

“We want to remain a low-cost-base business to maximise the value for our customers, and still use the latest enterprise applications in an integrated way to improve our responsiveness,” says Peter Greaves, a director at the firm.

However, the company faced a number of IT and telecoms challenges. On the communications side, they relied on mobile phones to stay in touch but this meant that they got substantial and unpredictable bills. It also made customers reluctant to phone the company’s staff in case they too had to pay for a mobile call.

They also wanted to improve their IT. They were losing emails on their mobile phones because of a restrictive POP3 email system and they couldn’t share one another’s diaries which made it difficult to coordinate their meetings.

Semcon Informatic Productions Limited

Working from home wasn’t working

Semcon Informatic Production Ltd is a part of the Semcon group. Based in Kineton, Warwickshire it employs around 200 people working for large car companies such as Jaguar Land Rover. It specialises in documentation and produces their aftersales care information, including owners and workshop manuals.

“The biggest issue we had was people working from home,” says Wayne Fathers, who is responsible for IT in the UK. Semcon, like other Scandinavian companies, wants to give its staff more flexibility about when and where they work. In particular, it lets people work from home for two days a week.

However, this was causing all kinds of practical problems. It was hard to get hold of people for meetings and discussions. Phone lines weren’t always manned or forwarded efficiently. And when people did forward their calls, they typical redirected to their home or mobile phone and, according to Fathers, “it was costing us an absolute fortune.”
